Be a Blessing Winner Is ....

Thank-you for making the first annual "Be a Blessing" campaign a huge success. I received eleven heartfelt nominations. Each of the nominees could have very well won and each are well deserving of their nomination. I hope they receive knowing that someone wanted to recognize them and wanted to thank them for all that they do.

Meet Steve and Heather Umberger, pictured below with their five children. Steve and Heather have been such a blessing to my husband and I throughout the years. Steve was Scott's Youth Pastor and through the years they have turned in to such close friends. They are such a blessing to us and I'm sure the same would be said if you asked anyone who knows them. Steve is a pastor in Bluefield, West Virginia and I was so excited that he and Heather were willing to choose this year's "Be a Blessing" receipient.

And now for the real reason you are reading the blog today, the announcement of the winner! Congratulations to Lillie Mae Rutherford who was nominated by Sherry Proffit. Here is Sherry's nomination entry.
I don't know where to start. I am writing about Lillie Mae Rutherford. She is known as mom to her 4 daughters (including me) and her 1 son. She has 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She turned 74-years-old today.

Lillie Mae was born June 25, 1938 in Morgan Co. to William and Reba Goins. She started working when she was a young teenager and only retired last year right before her 73rd birthday. She was married to William Rutherford and they had 5 children together.

By the age of  11 I was the only child left at home. My dad was always very sick and having surgeries. My mom for years was the only working parent. She never had her license so if my dad was too sick to drive her she would have to walk from our home to her job, which was probably 7-8 miles one way. It did not matter what the weather was, if she could not find a way she would walk.

My family has had lots of tragedies and my mom is always the strong one. My sophomore year of high school, in 1989, my sister-in-law was in a car accident in Sugar Grove Valley. She was hit head on by a driver on the wrong side of the road. My 4-month-old niece was killed in that accident. My brother and sister-in-law along with my whole family were devastated, but my mom was the strong one.

In 1992, at the age of 55 my mom took and passed her driving test. She was now able to drive herself to work if my dad was too sick. In November of that year, my dad was admitted to the hospital and passed away 3 days later. Again, my mom was strong for us kids. She continued working to pay bills.

Towards the end of 1995 my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. In 1996 after trying to stay in her home and then moving in with my Aunt and Uncle for awhile, she was placed in a nursing home due to the fact that she was falling and breaking bones. This devastated my mom. She would get up and go to work at 5am and as soon as she got off from work she would drive to the nursing home to help give my grandmother her bath, help feed her and just spend time with her. In Dec. of 1996 she was admitted to the hospital and passed away Dec 21. My mom was lost. Her mom was gone and she did not know what to do. After some time she went back to work.

My mom has 3 brothers and 1 sister who she is close with. Her younger brother who has always lived next to my mom was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. The doctors went in and removed it. Around Thanksgiving he found out it was back. On Dec. 2 he was told it was on the brain, in his lungs, in his shoulder and the lymph nodes. My mom was spending time with him from early morning until late at night. By end of January he started going downhill. I could tell it was taking its toll on my mom. She was not sleeping and hardly eating. By February my uncle was doing a lot of sleeping and when he was awake, he did not know who most people were, but he knew my mom. My mom was getting about 2 hours of sleep per night. She was cooking or going to buy food so that my aunt, cousins, and anyone who came to see my uncle could walk next door to her home to eat. My uncle passed away February 14, 2012 with my mom, my aunt, his 2 daughters, 2 of my sisters and myself there with him at his home. My mom had lost her best friend.
2 weeks later, my mom got a call from her sister. She was at work and received a phone call that her only son had shot himself and was being flown to U.T. My mom, still trying to catch up on the sleep she had lost due to my uncle got out of bed, got dressed and went to U.T. to be with my aunt and uncle. She spent well over a month there until my cousin passed away. She then went home with her sister to be there to help out anyway she could.

My mom NEVER does anything for herself. She never shops for herself. The only time she gets new clothes is when me and my sisters buy it for her. She takes her money and pays bills and helps out anyone who needs it. When she was working she would have teenage kids come in who were going to school and would not have enough money to buy them breakfast or something to drink and she would tell them to go ahead and get them something and she would pay for it.

She has said for years she would like to have some photos taken so she could give all of her kids one.

Congratulations Lillie Mae! You will receive a $100 gift certificate from Memories & Blessings Photography. Renee will also receive a gift certificate in the amount of $50.

The decision was hard so I allowed Steve and Heather to pick a second place winner. This winner will receive a $50 gift certificate. Congratulations to Bobby Joe and Sonya Headrick. Here's what Krystal Griffis had to say about them.
I would like to nominate a couple in my church and their family.  Bobby Joe and Sonja Headrick.  They a wonderful Christian family and they have been such an inspiration to my husband and I.  They are just great people that seek to serve the Lord in all they do.  They help tremendously with the youth in our church.  She teaches the teenage girls Sunday school class, and they have led the VBS at our church for as long as I can remember.
That being said they don't have a lot of material things, and are struggling in this economy just like the rest of us are.  She is a school bus driver and he can't work because he has very bad eyesight.  But even though they may not have much they are the kind of people that would give you the shirt of their back if they knew you needed it more and it would help you.  They have always been there for my husband and I, and we love them dearly!  They have four children and three grandchildren, and I am sure that they would love to have their family photographed!
Each nominee will receive a $20 gift certificate and all those that sent in entries will receive a $10 gift certificate. Thank-you all again for willing to be a blessing to others! I look forward to meeting each of you and getting to "Capture God's blessings in your life!"

Be a Blessing

When I first began Memories & Blessings Photography I knew I wanted it to be more than a business. I wanted it to be a ministry. A ministry that served others and a ministry that I could use to be a blessing to others. I pray that over the past two and half years I have been able to be a blessing to at least one person.

As I was reading posts in a local photography group's forum this morning, I was deeply touched. A local church is giving a couple a dream wedding - just giving it to them! The couple is part of the church and simply can't have the wedding they've dreamed of and this church is showing their love to the them by giving and preparing the wedding - and it's even going to be a surprise! What an awesome way to show God's love to someone. After all, God gives us things that we simply can't give ourselves. Does salvation ring a bell? Entry to Heaven was something we could not do on our own and in God's loving way he sent His Son to make a way for us to have the ultimate wedding in Heaven one day.

I began to think what can I do? What can I do to be a blessing to others? I also wanted to be able to share this experience with you. Here's what I came up with ...

You will have the opportunity to nominate a family, a couple,a person, whoever, to have a FREE photo session. There will be absolutely no cost to you or them. The deserving recipient will receive an hour long session, a Photo CD and a print release. You can nominate anyone you would like. All you have to do to nominate someone is send their name and why you believe they deserve the session to memoriesblessings@yahoo.com. All entries must be sent in by Wednesday, June 27th. Pretty simple right? On Thursday, June 26th I will have someone read all the entries and pray about who should receive the session. The winner will be announced on Saturday, June 30th, once I get home from the Summer Mini-Sessions. I promise you will receive a blessing by trying to be a blessing to someone else.

I also want to do something for everyone who participates. All entries will receive a $20 gift certificate and all those who send in entries will receive a $10 gift certificate. Again, the winner will receive a FREE session from Memories & Blessings Photography. The person who nominates the winner will receive 50% off a session.

I'm sure you immediately thought of someone to nominate. If not, pray about it! God will lay someone on your heart. Don't forget to send all your entries to memoriesblessings@yahoo.com by Wednesday, June 27th. Don't miss out on a chance to be a blessing!

Half Way There

Can you believe June 1st is already here? I can't. In January, I shared with you 12 goals I had for Memories & Blessings Photography. Since the year is half over, here's is an update on how I'm doing accomplishing them. If you can help me mark off any of things I have left to do, let me know!

1.   To photograph a session in Cades Cove.
Session is booked for the Fall.
2.   To photograph in two new locations.
I photographed a session at the American Museum of Science & Energy and then a session in "The Cove".
3.   To start a blog.
Thank-you for being faithful to read it!
4.   To give away a discounted session, at least once a month.
So far, so good!
5.   To receive 2000 likes on Facebook.
I am currently at 1,136 "likes".
6.   To photograph a session in a big city - Nashville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, etc.
7.   To photograph at least 125 sessions.
I have photographed 49 sessions and 1 wedding so far this year!
8.   To redesign the website, business cards, labels and forms.
9.   To do a "Trash-the-Dress" session.
10. To photograph at least 20 new clients.
I have photographed 16 new clients so far! This number completely blew me away when I counted them up, I hadn't realized I have had that many new clients. So blessed!
11. To photograph at least 75% of my past clients.
12. To photograph a session of my children at least every other month.
So far, so good.

In March, I added a few more goals to the list.

1. To photograph a wedding proposal.
Still patiently waiting on that phone call or email :)
2. To photograph newborn twins.
The White girls are due this month!
3. To stay organized!
A work in progress :)

How are you doing on your personal goals? I look forward to sharing in December, hopefully, that I had accomplished all 15 of these goals!

From Photographer to Client

We've all heard that doctors make the worst patients, teachers make the worst students and well photographers make the worst clients. I was determined that I was going to be the best client in the world :) I was also determined not to stress out and try to have fun with our family photo session. That part was easier said than done - it's a mother's instict to stress out and make sure everything is perfect for her family's photos together. I decided that I would take some photos (using my iPhone) and document the process I took while getting ready for our photos. Sit back and enjoy and maybe you will learn something that will help you for your upcoming family session with Memories & Blessings Photography.

1. The Week Before

I have a closet in my hallway that I always hang our outfits up on the week before photos. This helps me visualize if everyone's outfits coordinate and also allows me to see them every day, several times a day. If at any time I don't like them hanging up on the door frame of the closet - chances are I'm not going to like them in the photos hanging on my walls. A question I get all the time is "what should we wear?". I like to take one piece of clothing with multiple colors in it and then coordinate every one else around that one piece of clothing. For this session, I fell in love with Brianna's skirt. I loved the rainbow of colors. Once I found her skirt, I put everyone else in a solid shirt and blue jean on the bottom.

2. The Day Before

The day before our session, I decided to pack a bag of things I knew I would need so I wouldn't have to worry about it the day of the session. In this bag I included diaper wipes, kleenex and diapers. Also, included were any props I wanted to use in our photos. Props are awesome! All photographers love when the family brings their own props. It makes your photos more you and makes them completely unique. I took along some bubbles, a book and two of my kids favorite things - a baby doll and Mickey Mouse. Also included in this bag was a little snack for Brianna. I knew she would want something to eat (she always does, lol). Make sure it's nothing that can make them messy - I wouldn't take oreos if I were you ;)

3. The Day of the Session

This is the day you'll be the most stressed! Try to relax and go with the flow. Make it just a normal day with the kids except really make the photos sound exciting. I told Eli all day that we were going to get to go to a park and we were all going to say "cheese" and show Mrs. Leah our pretty smiles. Tell them my name before hand. Maybe show them my photo on the Memories & Blessings' Facebook page. If they know my name and what I look like they may not be as shy once they meet me in person for the first time. The most important thing about the day of the session is try and get your kids to take a nap. Thankfully, although Eli is going through a no-nap phase, I was able to get him to go to sleep which made a big difference during our session. A sleepy and grumpy kid does not want to smile and make pretty pictures :)

As you're traveling to the session remember, make the session seem really exciting! Make the kids think you're going to do something really fun. After all, it only happens maybe a couple of times a year. It's a special event! This is also the time you want to "bribe" or "threaten" your family, lol. Just kidding. Although, a little bribing goes a long way! After our session we were going to go to a cupcake shop - this made Eli very excited! So as we were going through our session if he didn't want to smile we just reminded him of the cupcake he was going to get at the end and a big smile would appear!

4. The Session

All you have to do is smile and help control your kiddoes! Let the photographer do all the work. Have fun with your family! Just enjoy each other's company. Once your session is over you may feel like there is no  way on Earth that you will receive any good photos. I promise 98% of the time you will get atleast a few good shots! No matter how bad your kids were, lol. My Brianna didn't want to cooperate about 20 minutes after we started. She was already over it and she is such a wiggle worm we had a hard time holding her and getting her to look at the camera. Don't sweat it! The photographer has done this before! They've shot a session with wiggly kids - they're not worried about it and neither should you! Don't stress out or everyone around you will begin to stress as well.

5. The Days after the Session - The Waiting Game

This is the hardest part about your session. Waiting to see your images! I know I checked Facebook every 5 minutes this past weekend looking for some previews from our session. You're excited, anxious and a little scared, lol. Once you see those sneak peaks you have some relief. You know that you will get some great photos. You know all the stress and work planning out everything will be worth it! Here are some of our sneak previews from the talented Leah of Leah Nicole Photo.

Some Random Thoughts -

1. Go with the flow! If it can go wrong it probably will. The week of our session, Brianna got a spider bite that got infected and a bruise on her cheek. Most of the time, minor scrapes and bruises can be edited out if you want. So no worries!

2. The weather! As we were driving to our session it began to rain. Thankfully, it was just a quick shower and we were able to continue with our photos. If it's due to weather, let the photographer be the one to call you and reschedule your session. If you don't hear from Me - show up for your session :)

3. Have fun! I know I've said it over and over but it's true. If you're having fun it will show through in your images.

Did you Miss Me?

It's been 4 whole days since I've last blogged!! I know you missed seeing a blog post from Memories & Blessings pop up on your Facebook feed. I have been busy, busy and seem to be getting farther behind :( I know I say this all the time, but I can't thank you enough for your patience and understanding when receiving your photos. This time of year is crazy busy (so blessed and thankful, by the way)! Can you believe April is almost over? I just finished up shooting the MPCA Formal along with their class photos, Kindergarten graduation photos and K4 graduation photos. I am so blessed and honored they allow me to photograph their events each year. I love working up there!

May 2012 is going to be full of awesomeness - is that word? I'm doing Mommy and Me mini-sessions, some maternity sessions and lots of family sessions in between. Plus, lots of my new babies I get to photograph are due this month and the coming month of June! Then starting tomorrow, each Sunday's blog post will be written by a guest blogger. She has an amazing God-written love story that she recently shared on her personal blog and has so graciously said I could post her story on my blog. You're going to love it and each week you're going to want more of the story! She is an amazing writer and I am so excited to share her love story. The second thing I'm thrilled about is May's "From the Heart" story in our Memories & Blessings newsletter. You're not going to want to miss reading this sweet lady's story. You will be blessed!

Be on the lookout over the next few days for more posts about sessions and videos. They'll be flooding your Facebook feeds soon. Oh, and on a side note - once Memories & Blessings Photography gets to 1200 fans there will be a giveaway :)

The New (and Improved) Slideshows

Happy Friday evening! I just recently made the jump to Animoto. It is a great program that allows me to make better slideshows for you. I can post the videos straight to Facebook, your email, my blog or YouTube for no charge. However, the company charges a small fee to get the video quality needed to be able to burn to a DVD. I chose to go ahead with the program because I think it helps me make your slideshows much better! So, if you would like a DVD of your slideshow I will have to start charging a small fee of $5 per copy. I hope you think the fee is worth the quality of the slideshow, I certainly do. This fee will be added to your session fee on the day of your session if you choose to purchase one. Enjoy the new and improved slideshows! I'm having a blast making them. Have a wonderful weekend!

March 3, 2012

Hello, March!

I just realized I hadn't done a blog post since Wednesday! That's crazy :) This past week I posted sessions of Robbie & Kim and the Mekelburg family. Both of those sessions were shot at the Spring mini location - Knoxville Botanical Gardens. It was pretty last weekend but I expect it to be even more beautiful at the end of the month. Speaking of Spring mini-sessions - I have two spots remaining. One on Saturday and one on Sunday. Let me know if you're interested :)

In the midst of posting the sessions I forgot to post the "Wordless Wednesday" photo. So here ya go ...

March is going to be busy, busy. It starts with this coming week. It will be a full one! Tuesday I will have the opportunity to photograph a sweet family with a special surprise! Then later in the week, on Saturday, I have designated it "Baby Day". I have two maternity sessions, two baby sessions and then a family session. Busy, busy - help me pray it doesn't rain! I just looked at the 10 day forecast and it says there is a 30% chance for light showers. So make sure you keep your eye on the Memories & Blessings' Facebook page for lots of blog post in the near future.

Something else happening next weekend - our family photos! Thankfully, our outfits have already been chosen! We just have to get haircuts and Baby Girl some shoes. Looking forward to seeing all the great photos Leah of Leah Nicole Photo will get!

March 17th will be the wedding day for Mary & David at North Rockwood Baptist. We have been anticipating the big day for about a year - I'm so excited it's finally here! Then the 24th and 25th will be the Spring mini-sessions. I'm tired just thinking about all of it ;) However, the excitement always out weighs the fatigue!

So, that's just a little look into the next few weeks at Memories & Blessings Photography. I hope you enjoy the beautiful weather!

Right now I feel really silly "tweeting" because I only have 2 followers! Please follow me and stay up to date with Memories & Blessings Photography.

Okay so this is my new favorite website! I love Pinterest. It has everything you could ever think of and it is a great place to find new photo poses. I am determined that in 2012, each session will have at least one brand new pose that has never been used by Memories & Blessings before. If you have an upcoming session with me, make a board on your Pinterest site and begin looking for poses that you love. Then send me the link and I'll take a look at your board and have a great idea of what type of photos you're looking for. You can follow me personally and you can follow Memories & Blessings.

Instagram
I bombard this site with photos of my everyday life! Instagram is an awesome app you can find on your iPhone. You post photos and you can follow other people and see all the photos they post as well. It shows you a newsfeed much like Facebook except it's all photos!

The Changing of the Year, Means a Year of Changes!

I know that we are half way through January but it's never too late to make some changes! 2011 was a fantastic year for Memories & Blessings Photography and I am so eager to see what God has in store for Memories & Blessings in 2012. After reading other photographer's blogs, I have decided to sit down and make a list of goals to reach for this year. Here is my simple list of twelve things I hope to accomplish in 2012, the items are listed in no particular order.

1.   To photograph a session in Cades Cove.
2.   To photograph in two new locations.
3.   To start a blog.
4.   To give away a discounted session, at least once a month.
5.   To receive 2000 likes on Facebook.
6.   To photograph a session in a big city - Nashville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, etc.
7.   To photograph at least 125 sessions.
8.   To redesign the website, business cards, labels and forms.
9.   To do a "Trash-the-Dress" session.
10. To photograph at least 20 new clients.
11. To photograph at least 75% of my past clients.
12. To photograph a session of my children at least every other month.

I have already been able to mark a few of those items off my list! For example, you are reading my new blog - so there goes #3. I have been working on #8 - to redesign the website, business cards, labels and forms - and now get to cross it off my list as well! Take a look at all things new at Memories & Blessings Photography. (Please excuse the pictures, they aren't that great, I took them with my regular point and shoot off of my computer screen).

The new business cards!

The new Photo CDs!

The new website! This has been a work in progress! I posted a design last week and just wasn't in love with it - here's the new and improve site, which I happen to love! Check it out, www.memoriesblessings.com.

The new Client Access page!

The next photo is of something I have been wanting to do for some time now. It's a brand new "Loyal Client Reward Card". I have so many great clients who return to me every time they need new photos. Why not be a blessing to you just like you are to me? At your first session in 2012, you will receive a "LCR Card", with one stamp, in your envelope along with your Photo CD, copyright and DVD slideshow. Collect four stamps on your card and receive $25 off your next session. You will get a stamp with both mini-sessions and full sessions. Please keep in mind, it is your responsibility to bring your "LCR Card" to each of your sessions.

The brand new Loyal Client Reward Card!

Can you help me mark any of my goals off of my list? Just email me or message me on Facebook to schedule a session.

But, before you leave the blog today I want you to help in completing one more of my goals. #4 - To give away a discounted session at least once a month. Facebook rules have changed (once again) and page owners can no longer have contests on their pages. If they get caught doing this Facebook will delete the page and not allow you to make a new one under that name. But no fear, I have found another site that will allow me to do contests and connect them to my Facebook page so you will still have access to them. There will be a link to the other site on my Facebook page whenever I do a contest. However, that's not the type of give away I'm doing today.

Everyone knows that February is a month for love. February 11th I will be doing a day of "Sweetheart Mini-Sessions" at the UT Gardens on the UT Campus. These sessions will be for couples only, no kids allowed! If you need to bring your children there will be a babysitter on site that you may leave them with for $5 a child. Here's your chance to win a half-priced mini-session (can not be combined with any other offer) on that day. Simply visit www.memoriesblessings.com and take a look around. Once you click on the Website photo, leave your name, email address and you and your Sweetie's anniversary date (when you got married or when you began dating) in the comment box on the left. I will give each email a number according to how I receive them.  You can also enter by leaving the same information as a comment on this blog post (not on the link on Facebook, but the actually post). I will give those comments a number as well. I will then use the "True Random Number Generator" on random.org to choose a winner. You have until Monday, January 16th at 8pm to enter.

Thank-you for taking the time to read this extremely long blog post! I look forward to seeing all of your anniversary dates and seeing who wins the half-priced "Sweetheart Mini-Session" (can not be combined with any other offer). If you don't win, you should still take the opportunity to get photos made with your Valentine. I still have a few spots available. Message me today to make sure you get a time slot!

Truly Blessed,
Megan

January 5, 2012

Welcome!

Welcome to the Memories & Blessings Photography blog! Having a blog was a 2012 business resolution of mine. I am so excited to be able to write down some thoughts of each session as well as post their images. I have been given the awesome opportunity to meet so many wonderful people - I want to share it with everyone!

This is how it will work ... the night of your session you will still receive 10 sneak peak images on the Memories & Blessings Photogaphy Facebook page. Once all your photos are finished being edited I will share some of my favorites on this blog along with a little something about your session.

God blessed us with a fantastic 2011 and I can't wait to see what He has in store for this year. I look forward to "capturing God's blessings in your life" in 2012.

Truly Blessed,
Megan Burnham

Special thanks to Leah Nicole Photo for the photos of my family! We're not the easiest group to photograph :)
